creative kindness – lets all play hopscotch

March is creative kindness month at Magical Daydream.

Marielle is always coming up with special little ways to be kind and spread some job in the world. (She has even made a kindness kit full of ideas and supplies to help make a kinder world.)

I’ve always liked the idea of doing something big to spread a little kindness, but have never found the right balance of self confidence, time, and budget.

So I’ve started small. So small that until I actually thought about it, I didn’t actually recognise it as ‘being kind’.
I’m a kind and generous person by nature so smiling at strangers, giving money to people begging, stopping to let people cross at cross walks, and holding doors open for people are just part of being a courteous member of society.

A few weeks ago I had a different kindness experience.
It was a fairly normal Friday night, the boyfriend and I went out for dinner and inexplicably ended up at the Inglewood Hotel. Somehow we always end up there even when we didn’t plan to.
A member of the bar staff who we hadn’t seen there for ages was working so we had a chat with her. There were a couple of other regulars there and a couple of faces we hadn’t seen before.

I ended up hearing the story from a lady who had the most lovely smile I’ve ever seen.
She had a severe stroke during childbirth 7 years ago, so the conversation was fairly slow going but I heard about her son. She loved her son very much and was very proud of him. She was there with her husband who had been in a motorcycle accident some years ago and so there were a few motorbike noises and miming.
Alcohol laws in Australia are pretty specific about not serving alcohol to those who appear intoxicated, so this couple follow around this member of bar staff who is familiar with them and their particular characteristics.

Conversation was slow going, but we got to a point in the conversation where we discovered that we were both born in May.
Earlier that night I had made a wire-wrapped ring with a fake-emerald stone and by the end of the night I had gifted it to her.
I really valued the few sentences that we were able to share and wanted to show her somehow.
It was pretty easy for me to make another one, but that small gesture meant so much to her. Her eyes lit up and she showed her husband and some other friends with such pride in her eyes.

I’m not sharing this to make me look like this really super-awesome person who is kind to everyone, but I wanted to share a story I may not have ordinarily shared with you. I come in contact with a lot of douchecanoes, particularly as I catch public transport am a lady with bright hair who likes sport and drinks beer. Something about that combination seems to attract douchecanoes. To have an awesome, sparkling conversation and developing a connection about something so simple as both being born in the same month was really cool.

I still wanted to do something that I could actually show you all whilst sticking within my comfort level, budget and time restrictions.

And so I invested in a 50c packet of chalk and drew a hopscotch board out the front of our house.
Of course as soon as I did that we had the first rain for 100 days and it partly washed away.
But for that evening, every person walking their dog or taking an evening stroll past out house had the opportunity to play hopscotch.

The message of ‘have fun!’ still remains though.

There’s still 2 weeks left of March, so have some fun, and go over to Marielle’s blog and prepare to share kindness with the world.

today will be jolly dammit

After another vaguely sleepless night, waking up with a headache and pulling off a piece of my car that was annoying me, Friday has not been off to a stellar start.

And then I checked my spam filter.

“What i do not realize is actually how you’re not really much more neatly-favored than you might be right now. You’re so intelligent. You know thus significantly when it comes to this subject,

made me in my view consider it from numerous various angles.
Its like women and men don’t seem to be fascinated except it’s
something to do with Girl gaga! Your personal stuffs nice.
At all times deal with it up!”

Which reminded me of the old lady who came up to me in the shops yesterday, commented that my hair was very jolly.

What a lovely quaint word.

So today will be jolly. Or else it will receive the same treatment as my car.

Beware of the tablecloths!!

My great-nan gave me a lovely tablecloth for my 21st. It’s a pretty crocheted number in an unfortunate shade of brown.
I’m not really a brown person, so I figured I’d dye it a pretty shade of mulberry.

20140129-100758.jpg

Unfortunately somehow during the lifting, twisting, rinsing, and hanging out to dry process I damaged my old lady shoulder.
After two weeks of physio I’m still on light duties which means no housework! (Woo!)
But also no using a computer or crafting.

And! To make things worse the tablecloth didn’t take the dye so if I want it mulberry I need to do the whole thing again.

I did manage to dye some yarn in the colour I wanted so that’s something.

20140129-101354.jpg

Wouldn’t that tablecloth look pretty in that colour??

So there’s been no crafting for a while.

But it was recently Australia Day which I spent in the company of good friends, good food, a misting jet, and fireworks from the deck. And past-Bek even did some of the dishes. Usually past-Bek isn’t quite so considerate.

Blankie progress

My crochet blanket is coming along like a house on fire.

That’s a pretty bad analogy considering all the bush fires in Australia at the moment.

But it’s coming along really quickly.

I’m bound to slow up soon.
At the moment I’ve got the squares memorised.

I still think I’ll be lucky to finish it this year but I’m making a go of it.

Adventures in bread making

I was gifted a second hand bread maker as a house warming present.

My first creation was a herb, garlic, & cheese loaf.

It filled the house with a gorgeous aroma and fortunately tasted delicious.

It also makes a great pizza dough.

A whole new world of bread making has opened up.

Plus it has a jam setting!

On Top of Mount Wooly

caityrosey's avatarAll She Wants To Do Is Knit

On Top of Mount Wooly

On top of Mount Wooly

All covered with sheep

I lost my sock needle

Getting out of my Jeep

*

It rolled off my lap

And onto the floor

And then my poor needle

Rolled right out the door

*

It rolled to the pasture

And under a fence

Then under the hooves

Of a ruminant defense

*

I howled in frustration

I stamped and I stormed

Then I ran from the ruminants

So I wouldn’t get horned

*

I went back to the car

And took up my sock

With only four needles

I could still make it work  [Brooklyn accent here]

*

Driving away from Mount Wooly

I began to regroup

And vowed that next time

I’d try Magic Loop

Merry Christmas

I hope all of you Christmas celebrators out they have a lovely Christmas. And to anyone else who is celebrating anything else I hope you have a lovely holiday.

And to all you very important people who are working today –
Thanks. Especially to all the doctors and nurses who do an awesome job and are largely unthanked.

For all of those for whom this holiday is an awful and difficult time- much love and hugs.

Now let’s all appreciate David Tennant in a Christmas jumper.

A pair of earrings for the lady who loves cats

I am thoroughly enjoying having easy access to my craft supplies.
That being said my crafty room is currently in disarray as we (and by we I don’t include myself because I’m still on light duties) are assembling a spare bed in there at the moment.

But it wasn’t on Saturday morning, so decided to sort through my modest collection of jewelry making supplies and organise them.

And by organise them I mean spend an hour looking for a specific pair of pliers, giving up and making a pair of crazy cat earrings.

My talent currently extends to sliding beads and making flimsy joins, but that’s enough to make a pair of earrings.

An exercise in yarn bombing

One day my beloved HeWhoFishes is going to wake up one morning and the whole house will be covered in yarn.
Actually he probably already has nightmares about it.

Wouldn’t that staircase look brilliant yarn bombed? It’s oh so tempting.

20131219-073653.jpg

I don’t think I’ll get the required planning approval for the staircase, so I’ve started small and started to bomb my crafty-room-chair.

I was holding my first handspun in my hands, fondling it and wondering what I should do.
There’s only a small amount and various thicknesses.
I wanted to put it on display, but I didn’t know where.

And so I knitted it up and put it on my chair. (Yes I’m watching Bobs Burgers.)

My crafty room may still be disorganized with a pile of bedding in the corner (it will double as a guest room), but maybe by the time my room is ready, my chair will be ready too.

5 day weekend

It all started with Bon Jovi on Thursday night.

20131218-080004.jpg

Which I actually remembered to take my camera to. So I have to actually put some effort in before posting.

Bon Jovi was followed by 5 days of cricket watching and Australia winning the ashes.

It was absolutely stinking hot (4 days of 38+ degree heat) so naturally I caught a cold. I didn’t even get much knitting done because I couldn’t stand touching anything.

Now you must excuse me while I take a kip under my desk. I’m a wee bit tired.

Zzzzzzz
