Things my left arm is useful for

It’s been 4 days of being one handed. And in that time I’ve discovered how little I valued my left hand.

My right hand gets all the glory. It’s stronger, automatically gets the jar opening jobs, and (when I used to play piano) all the pretty melodies.

The left arm is not so useful. Yes it would hold stuff. But I’ve since discovered a whole heap of stuff my left arm is useful for. There’s the usual, getting dressed, cooking dinner, washing dishes which I’m milking for all it’s worth delegating to other capable members of the household, but there’s other things the left hand helps with.

* holding the spoon whilst trying to get enough liquid out of a tea bag to get it from the cup to the bin without making a mess (and another potential slip hazard)

* opening packets of biscuits which you had sticky taped closed but now it’s impossible to get the end of the sticky tape to open.

* opening an umbrella. This task is made more difficult when it’s already raining and the umbrella is sheathed in what is now referred to as The WORST INVENTION EVER!! Inevitable you will end up swallowing all pride and walking the 100m from the train station to work in the rain repeating “I am not the wicked witch of the west” underneath your breath like a mad woman.

*brushing my teeth was surprisingly not difficult. The child proof cap on my mouth wash is discriminating against one handed people and don’t get me started on flossing.

*ziplock bags are most knitters friends. But is there anything more sad* than packing up ones wip’s because they’re not going to receive any attention for a while, placing them lovingly into ziplock bags, but not being able to close them by yourself.

There are some things that you cant trust others to do.

*please read this in the spirit it was written. I am not in any way insinuating that my out of action elbow is a serious thing. I am hugely grateful that I can get good quality medical care, and that I am privileged to have 2 working arms to begin with.
I am laughing at myself and the predicament I find myself in.

The weekend where Bek is clumsy

I’m clumsy. In my 27 years on earth I’ve broken my arm once (falling off a desk), had staples in my leg (a rogue nutella jar), and have various scars from hair lackys, baking equipment, and cereal boxes.

So I’m clumsy, my best friend is accident prone, and my Mister, well between getting old diseases like scurvy and gout, gets bitten by spiders quite a lot.
We are in Australia I guess.

So this weekend it was my turn to be clumsy.
At some point on Friday night, whilst the three of us were quietly watching a game of football with a few quiet beers I’ve fallen over pretty hard and sprained (possibly broken) my elbow.

Clumsy.

So the rest of the weekend was spent not knitting. Including a trip to the doctors which is usually prime knitting time.

I’m also discovering just how much I use my left arm (I’m right handed which is lucky), but this blog post has taken me twice as long to type as it usually would.

So I’ve tripled my favourite list on Ravelry. Ordered some yarn from etsy. Watched some football (without falling over). And am now waiting to have an X-ray this afternoon.

I’m pretty sure it’s not broken. But I am rocking a very sexy sling.

So there are no knitting pictures from the weekend.
But this is the sunset on Friday night.

And please excuse any typos. This one handed thing is hard.

Socks. All about socks

Well this pair of socks started came into the world a while ago.
The flew to Melbourne and back without a single stitch being added.
They then sat around looking at the blanket being knitted, feeling lost and abandoned.

And then when I do pick them up again, I’m already kind of bored. I’m knitting them half heartedly thinking “I wish I had a pattern, or something more interesting than sockinette”.

Aha! I’m about to do the gusset, surely I can do something different with that!

So I hunted down Ravelry and found a centre V increase. I modified it to the number of stitches I had and I was on my way.

The heel turned with ease, the ribbing was complete when I felt restless.

What else can I do or learn for these socks.
Picot edging!
I love the look but have never learnt.

So onto YouTube I go and find my knitting guru, knitting by Judy.

And voila! I have a pair of socks with some interest.

The yarn is Moda Vera noir (as I can’t help but buy it in every pretty colour), and I’ve used two different colours and switched them over at different points.

Two at a time baby!

Polka-dot vintage markets (how could I resist)

With a name like that, how could I resist?

With an equal share of crafts, antiques, and vintage clothing it was something I was keen to check out.

And I found a few gems.
My favorite being Kate’s tea pot hats.

They were so beautiful. And she has a new etsy shop which has just opened! It’s full of delightful tea pot hats.

Aren’t they pretty!

There were so many pretty tea pot related beauties.
I also spied these wind chimes.

There were tea cup bird baths as well!

And so many pretty tea cups!

And not so pretty ones.

But I only came home with one.

There’s another one in Perth in November. Perfect for all my Christmas shopping!

It’s finished!!! (and in the nick of time too)

The 10 stitch blanket is finally finished!
And just in time. My new niece was born this morning in the early hours.
So I missed the free postage (my parents flew over as they’re on the other side of the country) but it will get there safe and sound.

I included the washing instructions on a photograph of the blanket (thank you photo). And I was I inspired so I did a congratulations card using a photo of us.

So it’s finally finished. I can cast on something new now!!!

Stuck in my head – Neutral Milk Hotel

I get reminded of this song almost everytime I look in the mirror thanks to my gorgeous neutral milk hotel necklace

If I had to choose an album to write all the lyrics on my wall I’m choosing In The Aeroplane Over The Sea. Although I would have to find a way to express the melody of The Fool.
How does one write the lyrics to an instrumental?

I hate bananas (but these passion fruit and banana muffins are good. Apparently.)

It’s horrible baking something that you can’t eat.

I really don’t like bananas. I dislike the smell of them so much that I have been known to throw up.

So while my boyfriend was away for the weekend, the bananas we had in the house got smellier and smellier. They were getting to the end of their life.
I detest throwing out food. So I decided to be brave and make it into something.

So I found a recipe for banana muffins. which looked relatively straight forward.

So I made one variation to the recipe which was to use passion fruit Greek yoghurt.
Apparently this was a welcome addition.

It does feel really weird blogging about a recipe that I haven’t tasted myself.

But I am assured that it worked.

the ingredients
1 banana (mushed)
1/2 cup passion fruit flavoured natural yoghurt
1/4 cup sugar
1/3 cup olive oil
1 egg
1 & 1/4 cup self raising flour

the recipe
Mush the banana.
Add the yoghurt, sugar, olive oil, and egg and mix together.

Add the flour and mix gently (try just 1 cup to begin, but add the extra 1/4 cup if necessary).

Spoon into a muffin tray and bake for 25 minutes in a 180 degree oven.
Or until they look cooked. They should spring to the touch.

I never thought I would feature a banana based recipe on my blog. And I would love to have a non biased opinion on these banana and passion fruit muffins.
