Curse the things that have made me sad for so long

Curse the things that made me sad for so long
Yeah it hurts to think that they can still go on
I’m happy now
Are you happy now?
Spoke out the things that you‘ve worked out to be wrong
You got two hands to take all you can, but don’t take too long
To be happy somehow
Are you happy now?
Figured out I’m good
Turn me down like I knew I should
Punch drunk, dumb struck, pot luck happy happy
Don’t chicken out, it’s all good
You’re allowed to be what you could.
Punch drunk, dumb struck, pot luck happy happy
Punch drunk, dumb struck, pot luck happy happy
Punch drunk, dumb struck, pot luck happy happy
Figured out I’m good
Turn me down like I knew I should
Happy now
Don’t chicken out, it’s all good
You’re allowed to be what you could.
I feel good
I feel good
I feel good
I feel good
Curse the things that made me sad for so long
Yeah it hurts to think that they can still go on
I’m happy now
Are you happy now?

#SOTW – Veruca Salt

There’s been so much nostalgia this week once I heard Veruca Salt are reforming and touring in September!!!!

Even though I really only ever loved one song, its such a kickarse song that its been on repeat this week.

However they’re playing the day after the AFL grand final so I’m not planning on buying tickets just yet!

things i’ve done recently in dreams

– lived in an ikea store and bought a pet goat. But it came in a box which I thought was cruel

– was the first female player for the AFL except instead of an oval it was played in an amphitheatre. Melbourne were still bottom of the ladder

– solved a murder walking through a mystical land with Sheldon Cooper. We could only speak the truth which made things kinda difficult. But I could shoot lasers from my eyes, which was handy

– had a book buying binge but couldn’t pay so instead I formatted some of their documentation. It was a mess. There were so many opportunities for field codes.

– took refuge under a giant mushroom during a storm. The lightening was magical and gave me superpowers. But lame superpowers, nothing actually useful.

– went dalek shopping

Song of the week x 3 Pomplamoose, BOY, Haim

There’s three songs of the week this week.

They’ve all been on repeat and I just couldn’t pick between them.

Michmash posted about Pomplamoose which somehow led to BOY which led me back to Haim.

And I haven’t been able to stop listening to any of these songs.

I won’t and you can’t make me.

My weekly music post.

I’ve done a song of the week post nearly every week for the last two years, and I love it.

There’s a popular idea at the moment of having a jar and writing down the cool shit as it happens and then reading it in the new year. Well this is kind of the same except with music.
At the end of each year I have a playlist which is like a walk down memory lane. It reminds me of all the live gigs I saw, new music that was released, old music that I discovered for the first time, and provides the score to some memorable moments.

2012 it was Passionpop Wednesday, based on a memorable occasion which had to be celebrated with Passion Pop – a cheap, often nasty sparkling wine.
2013 it was Stuck in my Head, based on what happens when a tune becomes stuck and repeated over and over in one’s brain.
2014 I have decided to call it Song of the Week. Mostly because I don’t have to explain it.

Kicking off the year is new Silversun Pickups!
A new song from a band I love is always a good way to start a year.

And if anyone else wants to create a playlist for the year, now’s a good time to start! Shoot me an email (bekswhoknits [at] gmail [dot] com) and I’ll include you in my next post. I may even learn how to do one of those linky things.

Wolf & Cub

Wolf and cub kicked some rock and roll ass on Saturday night.

We got there as doors opened and enjoyed the almost-summer air with a few cold bevvies. Amps wasn’t sad and lonely for long.

The first support was nothing amazing, but doctopus who were up second were pretty cool.
Not enough men rock pigtails quite like the doctopus bassist.
And not enough lead guitarists play from lieing down on the stage.
AND not enough Aussie bands have songs dedicated to ice hockey and Wayne Gretsky (hello Canadia!)

Even though wolf & cub only have on drummer / drum kit on stage these days, they totally make up for it.
I think they may have a chance of breaking into the hottest 100 this year. 20131030-090938.jpg

We probably would have bought tshirts anyway (you can never have too many band shirts), but as the band members were manning the merch stand we had a chat, a couple of pics, and walked away with a signed poster.

All round tops evening watching a tops band and listening to some tops tunes live.

Of chvrches and wolf & cub

I recall seeing wolf & cub with about 15 other people at v fest 08 (or 09 my memory is hazy).
They were playing at the same time as Madness and The Kills.
I was running around like a mad thing between three stages.

And so I listened to their album a bit that year and had since forgotten about them.

Until I was skimming through the triple j playlist and saw that they had a new song out. So I added it to a playlist and it hasn’t left my head since.

I did almost the same thing with chvrches. As they’re highly tipped for laneway and there’s been a bit of buzz about them I thought I’d give them a listen. I wasn’t all that interested.
But again skimming through the triple j playlist I listened to Guns and have been hooked.

Serious ear worms both of them.
And the best part of looking at the triple j playlist is you still stay in touch with what other people are listening to, without hearing the songs you don’t want to listen to. Or the songs that they play 5 times a day.

Stuck in my head – wolf parade

I don’t get a lot of phone calls. And the people who do call all have their own special ringtones so I know who’s calling.
HeWhoFishes has Trail of Dead, although for the longest time he had Eartha Kitt – Girl from Ipanema
Midnitemoose has Cold War Kids – We Used To Vacation.
Hedgehog-onalog (my even though im not actually married to her brother i still call her my sis-in-law) has Hot Hot Heat – Bandages
My littlest brother has Mumford & Sons – Roll Away Your Stone
My middle brother has The Temper Trap – Fader
My Dad has Glen Miller – In the Mood
My Mum has Grandmaster Flash – The Message.

Mostly I choose ringtones because I saw that band with that person. That’s the case for the first 4 people on that list.
The last three are a bit more random. Mostly because to choose a song that reminds me of them would require me to put The Beegees (mum) or country music (my middle brother) as ringtones. Fortunately I’m quite partial to Glen Miller.

But my ringtone for everyone else is currently Wolf Parade – Shine A Light.
This week I’ve had more phone calls than all of last month combined. Real estate agents, valuers, and our mortgage broker all want to speak to me.

So every few hours I hear the opening bars of Shine A Light. Even while I was writing this post (because I do the majority of blogging on my iPhone) I heard the opening bars.

And it’s only now on reflection I think I should change it.
I’m not sure “waiting for something that will never arrive” is the vibes I want to be sending into the universe.

You Am I

I don’t know if You Am I were ever big outside of Australia, but for me they were one of those bands that you couldn’t avoid.
Even though I was never a massive fan they crept into movies I loved, hottest 100 CDs, and high school parties.

They played at the Astor on Sunday night and it was fantastic.

Stuck in my head – The Shins

Well if you have a look at my most played artists for this week you won’t find the shins.

20130703-075532.jpg

We had a stereo on board, which we could both plug our phones into and there was no one around.
So when HeWhoFishes was out on the dingy I did leap at the opportunity to sing and dance around like the crazy lady I am.
And I wasn’t dancing to the shins.

But when we weren’t being nostalgic and listening to Jebediah, and I was enjoying the solitude of being away from society and on a boat, I was listening to this song.

(And just to rub it in, here’s my photo collage which I use as my work computer background. One of the reasons I use hipstamatic, Instagram, and the a beautiful mess apps is not so all my photos look twee [which I do like] but it makes it easier to put into collages because they all use the same dimensions. My work computer has no fancy unworkrelated software so I resize the photos to 7cm using microsoft word and then copy and paste them into paint. Then I can chop and change photos as I like )
