Lunch at Silks bistro

A little while ago, when we were running errands on a Saturday, we stopped in at Silks bistro for some lunch.

The place was relatively quiet, it was obviously their downtime. But even so they had the music so loud we could barely hear ourselves think.

I was impressed by the presentation of the parma. It certainly looked better than your average pub grub. The olive tapenade around the outside was a hit in my book. Overall it was delicious.

Mr Polka-dots&sparkles had a burger, which he said was ok. It wasn’t anything out of the ordinary.

The verdict? We’d go there again, if we were in the area. But we’re not going to be planning a special trip.

Post brownlow nachos

Monday night was the Brownlows. The brownlows are the best and fairest for the AFL (Australian rules football).
It’s a chance to reminisce on the year of football as they go through every round winners and losers. My bestie comes round, we make snippy comments about how badly dressed the WAGs are, and we reminisce about a year of football. Usually it’s, that night at the pub when this happened or, that’s when we got all prettied up and went to watch the football at the Casino. There’s a drinking game involved and it’s generally a good night on the couch.

Which leads me to Tuesday, and my second hangover in five days. (I’m not usually such a lush. It’s football finals season, so expect another one on Sunday the day after the grand final).

So hangover food for me is a lot of food. My body tried to soak out the excess alcohol so I end up eating a lot of grease, starch, and cheese.

So after I got home from work, had a nap on the couch, all I wanted was nachos.

These are my nachos – the Mr has a different recipe and thinks mine are terrible. But he didn’t go to work yesterday, so he got stuck with my nachos.

The recipe.
Put corn chips in a tin.
Smother with chicken, salsa, and cheese.
Put in the oven until cheese has melted.

The photos aren’t pretty.
But it tasted good.

Baking chocolate biscuits

Because Sundays are made for baking. These are biscuits from a her name was greta recipe.

Delicious!!

A few minor variations to the recipe. Mainly in that I had white chocolate in the cupboard so I used that instead.
And I didn’t have enough butter, so I adjusted the mix at the end and added just enough milk to create the right consistency.

I’m looking forward to crumbling these over some vanilla ice-cream.
That’s if there’s any left!!

Piccos on Peninsula Rd

On a hungover Saturday, the Mr dragged me out to dinner and away from my tracky daks and tea (hangover essentials).
The promise was pasta and pizza. The place was Piccos. I didn’t even know where it was, even though it’s just 2 minutes up the road. Turns out I used to run past it all the time.

The location isn’t idyllic, but the attention to detail inside more than makes up for the location.

From the handwritten menu on the wall, to the table numbers, to the umbrella stand, every little detail had been thought of and executed beautifully.

We were unprepared as usual, so it was water only for the table but we’ll know for next time (and there will be a next time).

After the promise of pizza and pasta, we had to choose. The pizza menu had so many delicious items, but I couldn’t go past the bbq chicken, with capsicum and onion. It’s one of my favourites.

Mr Polka-dots&Sparkles, had the linguini cabonara.
The food was good, just what I felt like. And we were able to take the rest of the pizza home (which is great because I can never eat a full pizza).

But looking around at all the different foods around us, next time I think we’ll be a little bit more adventurous.

I really wanted to take photos of everything, the whole place was just so cute.

It’s a keeper.

Chicken pot pies

I used this recipe to use up a cooked chook that I had bought last week.

Little ramekins of goodness.

I modified the recipe somewhat, as it called for chicken thighs and I had half a cooked chook.

So cooked some onion, bacon, and frozen peas.
Then some tinned mushrooms in butter sauce for the sole reason that, that’s what I had in the cupboard.
The rest of the recipe I followed, mixing flour and water together before adding that and chicken stock and milk to the chicken already in the pan.

That went into ramekins, then covered in puff pastry and into a 200 degree oven for 20 minutes.

Then a glass of wine, a hundred from Hughes in the cricket, and some delicious chicken pot pies were ready to be devoured.

When the moon hits your eye…

Like a big pizza pie, that’s amore.

I love that song.

And I love pizza, particularly when it’s made for me. I even had 34 cents of olives to keep me happy.
It’s a bit of a pain that the Mister won’t eat olives, but he loves me enough to put them on my pizzas because I love them. I have been known to polish off a tin of olives before they got into whatever I’m cooking.

So I’m afraid I don’t know what was in these pizzas. The only technique was “a little bit of this, and then a bit more, and then some more until it looked good”.

I was busy catching up on my EA sports work out challenge. Being unwell I missed 3 workouts so I did them all at once. I now have the program down to a pretty decent cost per use (well under the cost of a gym membership).
I love my body. It does most things I ask it to, even if it does creak and crack. I’m just acutely aware that we’ve both put on a bit of relationship weight. Probably because we’re eating so well!
So I’m trying to move a bit more, eat a bit better, and drink a bit less. I sleep better and am happier, less stressed and more positive when I exercise. All good things considering everything that is going on in my life at the moment. And if my clothes fit a little better that can only be a plus.

So mini pizzas, with bacon, onion, cheese, olives, basil, salami, and possibly some other ingredients.
Delicious.

A footy game, a gig, and 5 days of sleep

…and you will know us by the trail of dead… was absolutely epic on Sunday night.
Words can’t even begin to describe it. That moment when you hear the riff to one of your all-time favourite songs, surrounded by people who love them aswell.
I may have screamed a little.

Between that on Sunday night and the football on Friday night I slept.
And slept.
Like Rip Van Winkle type of sleep.
I’m still not 100% but I’m back at work. I lasted at work yesterday for a grand total of 45 minutes of everyone telling me that I looked awful so I went home and slept some more (and watched some bad television).

Lets hope the new rapture album, a spotlight catalogue, project runway Australia finale, and a bowl of mac and cheese hits the spot.
Failing that a hot bath and some hugs from my man (or my dolls which now live in my clean spare bedroom).

FO – socks!

I got home from work at 11 o’clock and then slept for the 4 hours I should have been at work.

Once I came through I made my way to the couch.
Fortunately my boy can cook and he took good care of me, making a surf and turf with a side salad.

I also managed to finish off a pair of socks that I had started some time ago. They’re going to be a pair of three because you may notice that they’re different lengths and there’s already a hole in the toe of the first one. But there isn’t a hole in the second one so I’m getting better.

I’m home from work again today, but feeling better. Hopefully well enough to start a new pair of socks and finish off a selection criteria for a job I should apply for.
And trying not to fall asleep so I can get a decent nights sleep tonight.

xx
