16. …And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead – Will You Smile Again (133)

really in a trail of dead mood today – particularly after they’ve just announced new album set for release Feb 7.
i kinda can’t listen to this song without the prelude ‘ode to isis’ before it.
will you smile again has an awesome start – it was my ringtone for months
but ode to isis just contains everything i love about trail of dead, string orchestras, choirs, (doctor who soundtracks)
and then there’s the first time you listen to the song with headphones, as opposed to on a stereo, and you hear the super creepy
and, you, will, know, us, by, the, trail, of, dead
aargggh!!!!!

a couple of birthday lunches

and a new shirt.

this is my ‘break the code’ shirt from modcloth.
and somehow my hair was looking good. even though the lunch was at 1:00 and i didn’t get out of bed til 12:30 – i was not feeling good (still aren’t feeling good which is why it’s taken me 2 days to write about sunday)
but here are some photos

now i’m going to go back to dieing… loudly…

albums of the year

so, inspired by all the lists of the minute i’m putting together my top 10 albums list.
it’s limited to albums that i own, which is only 20.
the reason for this criteria is that i think in order for an album to be in my top 10 i should love it as an album – which i can only do if i can listen to it start to finish which usually involves me owning it.

so i’ve gone through the triple j album poll, made a shortlist of everything i bought this year (that was released this year) and here’s my top 10…

lasagne and crap telly

that was pretty much last night.
there was absolutely nothing on telly at all.
and because i didn’t know what time J was coming round i cooked up a lasagne, it’s something that keeps really well, it doesn’t matter when it goes into the oven and if he ended up not coming round i have more for myself.
but he did end up coming round, and watching some crap telly.
seriously i don’t know what’s with television at the moment, i know its non ratings season but seriously. we ended up watching the heat/jazz game, a bit of curling (yes it was that bad) and some repeats of sitcoms that we’d seen before.
but the lasagne was good

my mince sauce
first, put a chopped onion, a couple of sticks of celery (also chopped), and grated carrot in a pan with some oil and garlic. put the lid on and wait for it to smell good
then add the mince and let that brown up nice and good
add some red wine and some bbq sauce let that evaporate
add a tin of kidney beans and a tin of chopped tomatos
some chicken stock (from a box works) a bit of wooshter sauce herbs etc depending on what tasted good
some already chopped mushrooms (cos i’m lazy)
sometimes i’ll put spinach in as well but i put it as a side garnish instead

the cheese sauce
i tried something different – instead of making a roux, i went the cornflour route – just milk, cornflour, mustard powder, and cheese…
lots of cheese.

layered and topped with more cheese and fresh parsley…
delicious!

13. Portishead – Glory Box (140)

“so tired, of playing, playing with this bow and arrow
gonna to give my heart away, leaving to the other girls to play
cos i’ve been a temptress too long.
give me a reason to love you,
give me a reason to be a woman.
i just want to be a woman”

tempting as is it to just sing along with this, to pour my heart out to portishead as i’ve done so many times before, i have to concentrate.
try and bottle these feelings into a concise post which other people can actually understand, and not just a stream of consciousness about how i never felt like i was anything or anyone, and how this song tried to understand me. Continue reading 13. Portishead – Glory Box (140)

decisions decisions…

i am racking my brain trying to figure out what to wear this evening.
i’m going to see Bon Jovi!!!
my best friend in the entire world bought these super awesome tickets which involve a backstage tour and fan pack and dinner, and i told her that i would be ready at 3:00 which means i have to figure out what to wear now!
so i’m going through my entire wardrobe in my head and disregarding pretty much everything.
i really wish i had a virtual closet, like cher in clueless, that i could mix and match things.
all i have is my previous outfit posts and my memory.

i was thinking of wearing what i wore to the new pornographers – but it seems kinda strange to be able to wear the same outfit to two completely different gigs.
but i’ll post photos anyway
i didn’t previously because they both turned out horribly – because i was taking them in my room rather quietly because my boyfriend thinks its a bit strange and i haven’t really told him what i’m doing… he’s a bit anti-interweb.
but here they are…

is this a bon jovi worthy outfit?
i just don’t think it’s rock chick enough…

11. Billy Brag & Wilco – California Stars (143)

so the first thing that i do whenever i write one of these, what i now call “songs that itunes said, mean the most to me” posts, is listen to the song.
and as soon as i turned this on i started smiling.
“i like to dream my troubles are away on a bed of california stars”
i put my hands to cover my mouth, look towards the floor, silently smile to myself,
“i like to lay my weary bones tonight, on a bed, of california stars” Continue reading 11. Billy Brag & Wilco – California Stars (143)

it’s gone all wintery all of a sudden

wow … i dont know what’s happened to the weather but it doesn’t look pretty outside.
well it does look pretty but it’s not the 40+ degree weather that you expect in perth in summer.
it’s raining
which is great for the dams
and great for reading a good book (persuasion), watching some trashy telly (project runway), and pretending it’s cold enough to wear uggies.

so i put a chicken roast in the oven (chicken thigh with sundried tomatoes and cream cheese wrapped up, with roast tomatoes, pommes, and spinach and mushrooms sauteed in garlic butter = mmmmm!)
settled in with my new hoody, jeans, and my old favourite knee high uggies…
and listened to the rain and fireworks.
it was a good monday evening.
