etsy love – hungry designs

Every so often I have a conversation with someone who reminds me that I spend a lot of my life on the internet.

A joke about drinking out of mason jars and pintrest weddings fell absolutely flat. Explaining pintrest weddings also fell on confused ears.

The phrase “that would make a great tumblr”, also crashed and burnt.

And because I’ve been excited about my etsy store (which is still coming, but soon), I’ve been talking to people and I’ve been genuinely surprised at the people who just say “huh?”.

And it’s in those moment where I show people my handbag, show them my bracelets, and my necklace, basically show them my etsy purchases which I carry with me all the time.

This delightful brooch is a product of the oh-so-talented Amanda Whitelaw.

Who I followed on instagram (search hungrydesigns), which led to me buying a tote for my friend last Christmas, and then this brooch for myself.

Her designs are whimsical, edgy, sometimes dark, but always witty. And they’re one of a kind.

Her etsy shop has all kinds of delightful illustrations which are made into brooches, postcards, pocket mirrors, and I think I heard a whisper about tea cups.

The tea cups have me particularly excited.

I particularly love this kitchen aid brooch. How cute would this look on an apron!

But this is the brooch that adorns my bag. Since I bought my new camera I’ve been taking it around with me as much as possible, so I’ve turned into a bag person.
I love it! It turns an ordinary Rubi bag into something unique.
I love the whimsy of the baloons. It often distracts me thinking about the places she can go, or has been. All the things she has seen whilst drifting around on baloons.
I wish we could travel by baloon more.

Stuck in my head – And you will know us by the trail of dead

I always feel lazy choosing the first song from an album as my song of the week, or for my favourite song.
I feel like I haven’t done my due diligence, like people will judge me because I haven’t really listened to the whole album.
Of course this is absolutely silly.
Sometimes the albums first song is actually the strongest, the best, the one that I like the most, the one that sticks out, whatever subjective measurement I feel like using.

I have, of course, listened to the whole of this album. I think it’s a cracker.

And this is the first track.

sockies, fishies, and another -ies

The weekends are just flying by.

I’m now turning the heel of my socks which I started on Thursday (wow I know!), I did think I would try something new with the heel.
But I didn’t start researching the ‘after thought heel’ until I had finished the gusset increases.
Apparently the two aren’t compatible.

Oh well, maybe next socks.
I had a lot of time for sock knitting as we went for a drive to pick up some company for Max. For those of you who don’t remember, Max is our blue yabby.
We bought 4 Pygmy Perch to add a bit more interest to the tank. We also picked up some more plants.
We’ve quickly got into the routine where we wake up Max every morning (the light on the tank changes from night time blue to day time white), and we greet him every afternoon when we get home from work.
Max is a pretty good listener.
We’re both pretty bad at coming up with names, so we’re going to think about it for a week before naming the 4 newcomers.

I also finished up the design for my etsy shop! All it needs now is some product.
I have three cowls completed. Although one of them isn’t as long as the others and can only wrap around my neck once.
I now don’t know whether or not to put it up any way (after all, just because I don’t like it doesn’t mean that’s not someone elses preference).

But they still need photographs. Is needing a good space to take outfit and product photos a good enough reason to buy a new house?
(I think our angry neighbours and need for more space are probably better reasons.)

So overall a pretty good weekend.

What did everyone else get up to?

Grr argh

I’ve been a cranky person all week. Really massively cranky.

Cranky panda, temper tantrum, hissy fits, grrrrr!!!!!

So I cast on socks. (Once my headaches subsided).

It’s horrible, squeaky acrylic which I bought because I liked the colour. Fortunately I do still like the colour because the acrylic is annoying me.

It’s sport weight and surprisingly not stretchy at all. So I’ve had to increase it a bit after trying them on.

But the colours are pretty. Like icecream. Not that I’ve ever seen grey icecream. I think it’s just the pink.

I’m planning on doing the heel and cuff ribbing in the same grey as the toe. The toe which I did too much of.

Cranky I tell you.

But the weekend is just around the corner, and I have rounds of stockinette to keep me sane.

Stuck in my head – two door cinema club

Do other people’s music tastes change seasonally?

Every year I make a summer playlist. Somehow I have a special significance placed on finding a song that defines summer.
Quite often it also ties into trying to pick who’s going to take out triple j’s Hottest 100.

So I’ve started making my 2013 summer playlist and its really dancey.
(Or dancey by my definition).

I’m sure that as we get closer to summer and it becomes more than 10 songs, the genre will become less pronounced but this is the leading contender for my summer song.

(And not just because of the name)

All fun and games in the circus

About 4 weeks ago I had a disturbing conversation with my Father.

It was my Bloke’s birthday so we were going out for dinner that night. My parents were wanting to get him a present, and they wanted to make sure that we were free on a certain night.

Of course my mind went into over drive, wondering what they could possible buy us tickets for that we wouldn’t already have tickets for.

My bloke hates musicals with a passion, he even dislikes the musical episodes of his favourite tv shows, so I was hoping it was nothing like that.

And we have just bought season tickets to the Scorchers and our 5 day test match tickets, so sporting tickets were out of the question.

So I was very much perplexed and left wondering what they could possibly have bought us tickets to.

Well it was tickets to the circus! The Great Moscow Circus was in town, and so on Saturday night we went along.

We both had such an enjoyable time.
There was clowns, knife throwing, acrobats, trampolining, and even little horses (which I was very conflicted about. They’re so cute! But they’re trained animals!).

The grand finale was 5 motorbikes in a tiny enclosed space. I know enough physics to know how they stayed up there, but still! It was impressive.

We would never have gone to the circus ordinarily but I’m glad that we did.

stuck in my head – ms mr

You know when the fates align, when even though it feels like all you’ve done for the last 2 weeks is, go to work, come home, look at the mess that surrounds you, decide that knitting is a better way to spend your time rather than cleaning or cooking or being an adult about things, get hungry, cook something uninspiring, knit some more, sleep, wake up tired, go to work, repeat, and somehow a song manages to find its way into your head and you wonder where it’s been all this time?

Well between this post by and the laneway lineup, the universe has told me to listen to this band.
[Sidenote – i’m so bummed that Of Monsters And Men are only playing the east coast. I blame living in the most isolated capital city in the world.]

Suddenly after not having heard this song before, I can sing almost every word and it is stuck in my head constantly.

Not my usual knitting post

It’s a different kind of finished object.
An edible finished object.

A strawberry to be precise. Grown by my green thumbed bloke, eaten by me.

My bloke doesn’t even like strawberries, but he grows them for me.

It was a bit of sweetness to start a Friday in what has been a very long week. 20121005-073307.jpg

(I did have a massive long post which I wrote one sleepless night this week, but lets just leave it at, it’s been a long week and I’m grateful it’s the weekend coming up)

Worst photos ever.

It has been a headless chook week. As in I’ve been doing a very good impression of a headless chicken.

My grand plan to knit a pair of slippers for my mums birthday (tomorrow) didn’t go according to plan. I have two soles, and I thought I was right on track to just finish off the one remaining top until I realised the one top that I had, wasn’t to the pattern.
It was so off I couldn’t make it work.

So instead of just finishing the slippers on Wednesday (ready for birthday tea Thursday) I was frogging one slipper top and searching Ravelry for another idea.

Which ended up being a mug cozy.

And as I’ve been so disorganized this week I took photos after I have it to my mum.

So here’s to a long weekend to chase the headless chook blues.
