Dinner twist week 2

Was not quite as much of a success.

We had one meal following the recipe given to the letter, one meal which we used as guidelines and one which we didn’t make at all.

The curried chicken drumsticks with slaw weren’t all bad (although they left us with quite grubby fingers).
And you can’t go wrong with sausages and mash. However the ‘salad’ which was meant to accompany it I made only for myself, and didn’t eat half of it. The ingredients list was ok, (chick peas, olives, sundried tomatos, olive oil) but it was really bland.

So it’s back to preparing my own meal plans.
I think this would be something I would do if I had a week to myself.
But with ‘the gout list’ being followed a bit more stringently at the moment, it’s probably not the right timing.

We’re pet owners now!

We live in a small apartment. We do the best we can and manage to pack a lot in. We also manage a pretty nice garden which I’m looking forward to eating the spoils of quite soon (we bought strawberries on the weekend!). But it’s definitely too small for any dog or cat. People often suggest birds, but I have a bit of a bird phobia. Certainly the Weiro the Mr wants is out of the question. I could possibly handle something small and fluffy, but not a bird that talks and has definitely eye poking ability.

We have an aquarium shop just down the road from us, and so on Saturday we went down to have a look.
The idea was just to get an idea of prices and sizes but when I saw these two little guys I just knew we had to have them.

So say hello to our new pets!!! They haven’t got names yet, but for now they’re Mr and Mrs Pinchie (or Mr and Mr, we respect their life choices).

Aren’t they just the cutest!

They’re native to WA, blue yabbies.
We have some Pygmy Perch on order to keep them company too, but they have to come from the south west (again WA native fish).

We put them to bed at night (play god switching the white light to a blue light), and even though they’re not the sort of pet you can snuggle with, they’re still part of the family.
Now they just need actual names.

I cast on a cardigan!!

I finally decided to bite the bullet and cast on something wearable.

My biggest fear has always been it’s not going to fit.
So I had to choose a pattern which was all in one. Knitting two pieces and seaming them together is not going to allay this fear.

So I settled on Lady Kina. It’s short sleeved so it looked easy.
And it is!

I can hardly believe it. I cast on on Sunday, had Monday off (the aforementioned sneezing) and now it’s Friday I can see that it’s a cardigan!

I’m overusing exclamation marks today but I really am shocked and very impressed with myself.

It doesn’t look like much (yet) but I’m proud as punch!

Dinner twist

I must admit I was intrigued.
The concept is a box of groceries with all the ingredients for three mystery recipes.

I was a bit concerned that they wouldn’t really be ‘our style’. We can both be picky eaters about certain things. We both don’t like spicy food, I hate bananas, he doesn’t like rice. Sure the rice thing knocks out a whole heap of dishes, but pasta is an easy substitute.

So we got a box of mystery groceries and three recipes. All three were things I wouldn’t usually think to cook.
One was salmon with mustard baked carrots, a pork curry, and a salami, cottage cheese pasta.

All three meals where delicious in their own way.
But the best thing about it is being able to choose how you want to cook them.

Given that the Mister doesn’t like rice we had the curry with pasta instead. We got spicy Hungarian salami so we swapped it (with a work mate) for some less spicy salami.

Let’s see what we get this week!

Enough with the sneezing

Three boxes of tissues, a packet of antihistamines, buckets of lemon tea, and some knitted dishcloths.

That was the weekend.

I figured dishcloths are probably the best thing to make whilst being all germy. They’re going to be washed anyway so the germs will wash out.

And everyone in the family is getting dishcloths for Christmas. They’re practical which fits in very well with my family’s gift giving ethos.
Plus my mother in law is a big environmentalist and I’m going to score mega brownie points with some home made scourers. Although I’ll probably end up with a standing order.

So I spent most of the weekend with ravelry open looking for different types of dishcloths.
There’s the
waffle cloth, ripple cloth, heart cloth, and a loin cloth.

I was planning on giving the leaf to my Mumsi until the Mister kindly pointed out its resemblance to a loin cloth.
Thanks hun.

Grandmothers favourite.

This is the sum total of my knitting this week. Between resting my elbow, and then succumbing to the common cold this is all I’ve achieved.
Trust me, it’s difficult to knit when you’ve got one hand permanently holding a tissue to your nose.

So here’s one grandmothers favourite dishcloth in a horrible colour way (Moda Vera print).
It looks so pretty in the ball but the colour changes are too close together for my liking.

Anyway, this will be going in someone’s Christmas present and they’ll never have to know that I don’t like it.

Beside i dont know what else can I do with horrible yarn.
And what else I can just churn out when my nose stops dripping for more than 4 minutes.

I’m hopelessly pathetic when I’m sick. Someone fetch me some hot lemon and honey drink.

Stuck in my head – Skipping Girl Vinegar

Nothing says ‘summer is coming’ quite like Skipping Girl Vinegar.

Their first album was chock full of rocking, sing along, folk songs which always make me smile.

As well as having the cutest band name story, giving out baked goods at their live shows, and being really awesome people to hang with after shows, they’ve done what I think is the way forward for independent bands.
Which is a way for people like me to ensure that their money actually goes to the band.
With more and more people downloading, streaming, and even buying CDs, I’m always looking to make sure that I support local Aussie bands. I always try to go to shows, buy merch, and I always subscribe to my very awesome local independent radio station. (They have a live stream so check it out. )
Skipping Girl Vinegar take it one step further by asking for pledges to fund upcoming trips, recording sessions, and basically ensure that they can keep making quality music.

I think this is the way of the future and Skipping Girl Vinegar are leading the way.

Plus their film clips are always gorgeous and they sent a monkey into space.
