Stuck in my head – Stars

Mostly because I’m seeing them tonight!

This is the song that first drew me to them.

And this is their latest single.

Stuck in my head – a tale of two songs

One song which I would love to hear at Laneway, but is hugely improbable. (Wolf Parade – Cloud Shadow On The Mountain)

One song which I’m almost guaranteed to hear at Laneway, provided I’m there in time. (Kings of Convenience – I’d rather dance with you)

I’m at the cricket

Today’s post comes to you from the WACA.

I have polkadot converse and I’m knitting socks.

Tube socks which I’m hoping to finish today.

Oooh a wicket! Excuse me while I pay attention.

Stuck in my head – Yeasayer

I’m counting down to Laneway!

Laneway is fast overtaking Southbound as my favourite festival of the year. And this year the lineup is just steller. I’ve missed one Laneway in the last 4 years and I’m still disappointed with myself.

I’ve already featured most of the lineup with alt j ms mr cloud nothings divine fits and of monsters and men

Well I need to make a decision whether I’ll see cloud nothings or divine fits as they’re playing at exactly the same time (boo! but inevitable).
Fortunately no one clashes with Yeasayer. They were at the Laneway that I missed 3 years ago, so now I’m making up for not seeing them earlier.

I’m also trying very hard to not research any more Laneway bands. My day is already too packed!

Book #1 Coraline

Coraline has been sitting on my bookshelf unread like a lonely little puppy. With lonely eyes looking at me, willing me to put down my knitting, stop watching television and read it.

So I did.
And now I need to buy more Neil Gaiman books.
I always heard that he was a wonderful writer, and now I feel compelled to read more.

The heart of the story is about being brave.
Being brave when you’re scared and you don’t want to be, but you be brave anyway.
I sometimes need reminding to be brave, even if I’m not facing horrible situations, bravery is still necessary.

Book 1 was a good one. What do I read for book 2?

Finished object #2 – Summer Sky Socks

Sock number 1 in my 13 in 2013 challenge is complete and I’m in love this pattern.

Two at a time, toe up socks, with little delicate cables, on my favourite addi turbo 2.5 circular, with moda vera noir ( which is always on special).

My Bloke thinks I’m in a rut because all he sees me knitting is socks.
But not all socks are created equally.

These summer-sky socks (yay! alliteration!) were a great cable project for me. After learning how to cable without a needle on my Christmas Spirit Hats, I wanted something so I could really practice.

And these are it!

The pattern has a yarn over detail in the centre, which makes it really easy to know where you’re up to in the pattern. It was easy to memorise and didn’t require a counter (always a plus in my book).

I really want to knit more things with this pattern. I’m thinking maybe a pair of fingerless gloves. Who knew I would like cables so much?!

Stuck in my head – Local Natives

I only just discovered Local Natives about a week before they release their new album, but they’re old album is definitely worth a listen.
A bit like a simpler Cold War Kids, but with less piano. I’m not selling them, but they do sell themselves pretty well.

Maybe next year…

It was thrilling finish to Wednesdays game to put the Perth Sorchers into the semi final (watch it below and just imagine a green haired girl in the stands jumping up and down, hi-fiving everyone in sight.)

Unfortunately Saturday night’s grand final didn’t quite live up to expectations.

It was a bit of a fizzer if I’m honest. There was no buzzer beater, no heroics, not much of a fight at all. We knew quite early on that Perth didn’t look like winning.
But that’s allright. I mean it’s not like Perth hasn’t lost a grand final before. Oh wait! We did this last year too!

Still it’s not all bad news. The end of Twenty20 cricket (3 hour matches) means that Sheffield Shield (4 day matches) and Ryobi cup (1 day matches) start again. That’s the real cricket.
The longer forms of the game don’t attract the same crowds that Twenty20 does but that’s a good thing.
There’s less queues, less chance of sitting behind someone wearing a huge hat, and less chance of being stuck in the vicinity of the ‘wannabe commentator’.
(I sense a blog post brewing about the 10 most annoying types of people who go to sports events.)

I’m a grumpy old woman sometimes.
Ok a lot of the time.

Here’s my grumpy self after the game.

Finished object #1

I seem to be attracted to scarfs at the moment. It’s the middle of summer! Well I work in an office and wear tights and scarfs all year, so maybe it does make sense.

This charming fellow (as modeled by the newest member of the family) was a super quick knit.
In fact it was started and finished on New Year’s Day.

The yarn is leftovers from my cardigan. The pattern is quick but pretty.
I really love the design. I’ve always been a fan of bows, and the way this sits is really cute.

If I was to make it again I would shape the end a bit differently. It came out a bit pointy. This could be the pattern, but it also could be my inability to read patterns sometimes.

See. Cute!

Hottest 100

Well it’s that time of the year again.

Time to decide what what my top 10 songs of the year were (that were played by Aus radio station Triple J, and were popular enough to be included on their shortlist of songs to vote for.)

Some songs which I loved last year didn’t make the triple j list, (Trail of Dead) but I’ve learnt that if its not on the list, then it’s not going to be in the top 100, and my vote isn’t worth much.

It’s for this reason that I don’t believe the hottest 100 is anything more than the top songs which have been recommended for us by Richard Kingsmill.
Still triple j’s hottest 100, is better than any of the commercial radio stations and an Australia Day tradition.

So within those constraints here is my top 10 and close contenders.

20130116-113622.jpg

I’ll be hoping to hear these songs whilst enjoying a couple of cold beverages with my nearest and dearest (and a paddling pool for good measure) this Australia Day.

It’s live streamed if anyone cares to listen (jan 26), or you can check out my top 51 shortlist to fill your ears with rad tunes.
